Behind the Thread
MEET THE MAKER
LifeOfASewboy is a practice in transformation–of fabric, of memory, and of the stories we carry with us.
Rooted in the art of reclaimed textiles, LifeOfASewboy’s mission is to give familiar materials an unexpected second life. A donated shirt evolves into a sculptural Bloom; a forgotten remnant is reimagined as a tank, a bow, or a singular new form. Every piece begins with what already exists, taking shape slowly by hand through color, texture, instinct, and the quiet story waiting within the weave.
Shawn draws his inspiration from the rhythm of daily life: friendship, family, music, film, travel, tennis, and the people who invite him into their own narratives. Some creations commemorate a place or moment; others begin with a cherished garment someone couldn't bear to part with. Threaded through every work is the belief that fabric holds meaning—and that what has been worn, loved, or left behind can always become something beautiful again. At its core, LifeOfASewboy is where craftsmanship meets storytelling: sentimental but never precious, playful yet deeply considered, and always made with heart.
Based in DC, Shawn’s been keeping things lively across the District. Recent highlights include sleek pop-ups at Indochino, a stylish “Brunch & Bow” with Bramble & Rye, and a high-energy “Paws & Plunge” at The Glover House, Georgetown. Next up on the calendar? Bringing the momentum back home for William & Mary's homecoming!
Art you can wear. Stories you can carry.
VISUAL CRAFTSMANSHIP & EXPLORATION
Design Process & Creation
Explore how Sewboy reclaims garments evolve into sculptural blooms, tanks, bows, and other wearables through step-by-step process guides, material collections, and archival studio photography.
Source & Deconstruct
My process begins with what is already here: donated clothing, thrifted textiles, meaningful garments, and remnants too interesting to discard. I spend time with each material before deciding what it should become. Lines are carefully inspected, collars and cuffs detached, and seams unraveled for preservation. The material's color, texture, construction, and history all help guide the design.
I also collect buttons-small objects that carry stories of their own. Some are vintage, some salvaged, and others simply too unusual or beautiful to leave behind. Pearls, metalwork, crests, shells, and unexpected found details become the finishing punctuation of a piece. Often, the right button does more than complete a Bloom; it reveals its personality.
